15th European Ecological Federation (EEF) Congress & 18th Portuguese Ecological Society (SPECO) Annual Meeting

Lisbon 29 July - 2 August 2019
“Embedding Ecology into the Sustainable Development Goals”

The European Ecological Federation (EEF), will held its 15th congress in Lisbon, with the title “Embedding Ecology into the Sustainable Development Goals”. This congress was co-organized and supported by the Portuguese Society of Ecology (SPECO) and the University of Lisbon.

The United Nations’ 2030 sustainable development goals are a long-term policy framework for coordinating and integrating economic, environmental, and social policies across the world’s nations. The congress focused on how the integrative science of ecology could be used transversally across the sustainable development goals to create a more sustainable biosphere and a more equitable society.

The congress was divided in the following themes:

  • Theme 1. Inclusive ecological education (Goal 4)
  • Theme 2. Strategies for sustainable use of aquatic ecosystems (Goal 6)
  • Theme 3. Promote sustainable and resilient urban environments (Goal 11)
  • Theme 4. Promote biodiversity and efficiency towards a sustainable production (Goal 12)
  • Theme 5. Conserve and sustainably use oceans, seas and marine resources (Goal 14)
  • Theme 6. Protect and sustainably use land resources through desertification mitigation (Goal 15).
  • Theme 7. Restore, halt or reverse land degradation and biodiversity loss (Goal 15).
  • Theme 8. Acknowledge the integration of effective minimisation and mitigation actions towards climate change (Goal 13)
  • Theme 9. Encourage global ecological indicators development and implementation through revitalisation of partnerships (Goal 17)

The Congress aimed to present the most advanced achievements of ecological research and the burgeoning issues of ecologists, discussing inter-, intra- and trans-disciplinarily their impacts on the present problems societies face. Using the officially called “Major Groups” of United Nations, the conference intended to extend discussions to different stakeholders interested in services and societal benefits based on ecologically relevant interfaces.
